Stained Glass Window in the Silver Lake College Chapel by Dr. John Stern

The Silver Lake College Art Department is sponsoring an exhibit of Digital Photography by Dr. John Stern from today through Sept. 11th, 2009 in the Cafeteria Gallery.  There will be a reception from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3rd celebrating Dr. Stern’s work. All are welcome.

The exhibit features selections that reflect the unique aspects of the Silver Lake College Campus, chapel, and student life.

Dr. Stern is a practicing urologist in Manitowoc who has for years had a love for photography. He began honing his craft when Father Ribbens at Premontre High School in Green Bay was “looking for student photographers for newspaper and yearbook- will train.”  Father Ribbens taught Dr. Stern everything he knew about photography- shooting, composition, developing and printing in the film era. His creativity was developed further with the help of an artist friend of his parents, who taught him how to view and see light and shadows, character, and how to incorporate those elements into his composition.

Dr. Stern attended college at the University of Minnesota and worked for the University of Minnesota Daily newspaper.  At that time it was the world’s largest college newspaper, never less than 8 pages and with a Friday weekend edition of 36-64 pages, every week. Circulation was over 50,000.

The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
