The Silver Lake College Music Department will present two different concerts this coming weekend. On Saturday, April 24th at 7:30 pm, the Silver Lake Chorale and Concert Choir will present “An Evening with Brahms” and on Sunday, April 25th at 3:00 pm, an Instrumental Concert will be presented featuring the talents of the Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble and Handbell Ensemble. Both concerts will be held in the Silver Lake College Chapel located at 2406 South Alverno Road in Manitowoc and are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for Peter’s Pantry.
“An Evening with Brahms” will showcase the Concert Choir performing selections from Zigeunerlieder and the Chorale will present Marienlieder. Zigeunerlieder is a collection of Gypsy Songs that comes from a series of Hugo Conrat texts that Brahms set to music in 1887. Originally composed for a solo quartet of singers, Ziguenerlieder is a unique four-part work that incorporates both soloists and chorus accompanied by the piano. The famous Romantic era pianist Clara Schumann commented, “The Zigeunerlieder is full of freshness, charm and passion… so graceful and interesting.” Marienlieder, presented by the Silver Lake Chorale, is a set of a cappella choruses that feature a variety of non-sacred texts based in German Forklore but are focused on the various Mary’s that appear in the Bible.
The Instrumental concert will feature the Jazz Band on a variety of Jazz standards including All of Me, Stormy Weather, and Mercy Mercy Mercy. The Handbell Ensemble will present a unique combination of pieces that include both traditional Handbell literature as well as selections that combine Handbells with Flute, Guitar, and Drums. The Wind Ensemble will present selections from Joseph Haydn’s Feldpartie in C, Richard Wagner’s Elsa’s Process to the Cathedral from “Lohengrin” and John Phillip Sousa’s, The Black Horse Troop.
