Piano Pedagogy Lecture/Recital at Silver Lake College

Mary Harrell, a music student at Silver Lake College will present a Piano Pedagogy Lecture/Recital on Friday, March 19th at 7:30 pm in the Silver Lake College Chapel.  Mary is completing requirements for the SLC Certificate in Piano Pedagogy. She has been studying piano at Silver Lake for two semesters with Professor Melissa Martiros and previously for five semesters with recently retired piano instructor, Sandra Stevens.  

The topic of the March 19th presentation is “Select Repertoire for the Early Advanced Piano Student”. The repertoire includes piano literature from four periods of music history, namely: Sonata in A Major by Baroque composer, Domenico Scarlatti, Sonata in f minor, Op. 2, movements I and II by Classical composer, Ludwig van Beethoven, Duetto by 19th century Romantic composer, Felix Mendelssohn, and Lotus Land by 20th century British composer, Cyril Scott. The Lecture/Recital will identify aspects of the literature to be taught to piano students and then followed by Harrell’s performance of each. The recital is free and open to the public.

Since 1997, Mary continues to teach piano in a private studio at her home in Kewaunee.  She is a church musician performing regularly for worship services in her hometown. As an accompanist, she works with band students for the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival at the grade school and high school level. She is a member of the Northeast Wisconsin Piano Teachers Forum. Mary lives in Kewaunee with her husband Ray. They have 3 grown children, Brandon, Adam and Kim (daughter in law), Renee and James (fiancé).
