St. Francis of Assisi Parish and Silver Lake College of the Holy Family are pleased to announce the eleventh year of the Father Bill Zimmer Forum. Bishop Robert F. Morneau, a published author and Pastor of Resurrection Parish in Green Bay, will launch the 2011-2012 season with a discussion of Faith Maps by Michael Paul Gallagher on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 11:30 am.

The Bill Zimmer Forum is a book group for people of all faiths and is named after Father Bill Zimmer (1934-1999), a priest best known as a friend to people in need. In 1995, the Interfaith Academy of Parish Clergy named Father Zimmer as National Pastor of the Year. Father Bill was an ecumenical leader, a champion for social justice and a catalyst for the Hmong and Hispanic ministries in the Manitowoc area. His life serves as a model of courage and conviction to those seeking meaning in the life of faith.

The mission of the Father Bill Zimmer Forum is to nurture the spiritual formation of Catholic lay and professional people in the context of their busy lives and its goal is to provide spiritual, intellectual and moral enrichment. The purpose of the inter-denominational perspective is to share, explore and expand each other’s appreciation of the way God works in our lives and through our faith communities.

The Bill Zimmer Forum is held the second Tuesday of every month from September to May in Room 117 at Silver Lake College, 2406 S Alverno Rd, Manitowoc. Attendees are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch or purchase lunch from the College cafeteria. Parking is available near the East entrance of the College. Pre-registration is not required nor is there a fee to attend the Bill Zimmer Forum.

Other speakers participating in the 2011-2012 Bill Zimmer Forum series include:

Bill Swichenberg – Adjunct Professor, Commissioned Ministry Program: Diocese of Green Bay

Paul Wadell – Professor of Theology, St. Norbert College, DePere, WI

David Gilboa – Professor of Philosophy, Silver Lake College of the Holy Family

Brian Shaw – Retired Teacher and Basketball Coach, Author of Hoops and Homilies

Julianne Donlon-Stanz – Adult Faith Formation Director, Diocese of Green Bay

Bishop Jim Justman – Bishop of the East Central Synod of WI

Supplies benefit the teachers and students at Franklin and Jefferson Elementary schools, both Title I schools in Manitowoc, WI. After receiving the donations, teachers will use the supplies in their classrooms and provide materials for those students who come to school empty handed.

“One of our program’s goals is to provide students with the necessary tools they need to excel in school” said Tara Wachowski, Program Coordinator of Look Ahead Lakers. “By donating supplies directly to the teachers, we know the supplies will help create a rich learning environment and reach students who need the supplies the most.”

For more information about Look Ahead Lakers, please contact Tara Wachowski at (920) 686-6217 or tara.wachowski@sl.edu.

Selecting a college is a big decision for students of all ages. Private College Week – Monday, July 11 through Saturday, July 16 – is designed to make the job a little easier. For the thirteenth straight year, all of Wisconsin’s 20 private nonprofit colleges and universities, including Silver Lake College, will hold a joint “open house.” Throughout the week-long event, the colleges offer guided campus tours that give students and their families a chance to gain an appreciation of the school, meet with staff from the admissions and financial aid departments, and visit classrooms, residence halls, and other facilities.
For Immediate Release

May 20, 2011

MANITOWOC —Silver Lake College has been named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. This is the highest federal recognition a college can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement.

Announced May 13th by The Corporation for National and Community Service as part of its Learn and Serve America program, the honor represents more than 700 student hours of community service during the 2009-10 academic year.

As part of its commitment, Silver Lake College offers courses that integrate community service with academic content. It funds annual scholarships that recognize a history of service among incoming freshmen and transfer students. The college also employs three staff members whose responsibilities include planning and implementing community service and service-learning activities, including the following examples.

In 2005, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina inspired the College to begin an alternative spring break focused on community service. Participants have spent time on Mississippi’s coast, helping where needed. This past spring, 10 students and four staff members spent three days in Chicago, ministering to the homeless under the auspices of the Brother David Darst Center for Justice and Peace.

Closer to Manitowoc, the College collaborates with area schools, including Jefferson Elementary, Manitowoc, and Koenig Elementary, Two Rivers, by sending college students to work as tutors as part of the America Reads/America Counts program, which President Clinton started in 1996.

The college also focuses on workforce development through its participation in Manitowoc County Partners in Education. Representatives from business, higher education and local school districts collaborate to offer annual programs for middle school and high school students, as well as adult learners.

These projects, and other initiatives, put into practice college goals that require students to understand and practice servant leadership, and participate in and organize service projects by the time they graduate.

Silver Lake College is proud to announce the winners of the second annual Mother Generose Cahill Scholarship Competition. The Mother Generose Cahill Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship offered to two new, full-time, undergraduate students per year. The scholarship honors students who excel in the Silver Lake College traditions of academic achievement, leadership and community service.

On February 11, selected student competitors were invited to campus to participate in an essay-writing contest and interviews with a faculty panel representing the academic departments of the college. Ten students and their families attended this year, coming from Manitowoc County and other communities from across Northeastern Wisconsin.

The two students chosen as the 2011 Generose Cahill Scholars are: Mary Teresa Bettag and Elizabeth “Libby” Sara Spencer.

Mary Bettag, daughter of Mark and Teresa Bettag, from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, will graduate from Roncalli High School in the spring. At Silver Lake College, she hopes to major in Elementary Education, and pursue her athletic interests of golf, cross country, and soccer.

Libby Spencer, daughter of Christopher and Sara Spencer of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, will graduate from Manitowoc Lutheran High School. In the fall, she plans to study English at Silver Lake College, and hopes to be involved in volleyball and vocal and instrumental music. She will be joining her brother, Nick Spencer, who is currently a junior at Silver Lake College.
